Event description

We are starting Belgian Beer Week a little early! A surprise visit by the Australian Brand Ambassador for Brouwerij Van Steenberge brewery is happening, so we thought why not. Van Steenberge produces a number of classic beers including Gulden Draak, Piraat and Baptist, among others. Join in the fun with an intimate sit down dinner of Belgian Boulet and frites with a schooner of Baptist Wit and taster of Gulden Draak Classic. Milan from Van Steenberge will let you know all about these two very different brews and the fascinating history of this family owned brewery.

Brouwerij Van Steenberge has been cranking out the good stuff since 1784 passing through six generations. Initially founded by Jean Baptiste De Bruin and his wife Angelina Petronella Schelfaut. The brewery was continued down the family tree through nephews, daughter’s husbands, grandsons and had a few name changes along the way. Through the generations, the family tradition has been one of daring, boldness, experimentation and perseverance. Van Steenberge proudly pronounce themselves ‘experimentally traditional’.

Gulden Draak beers have been traditionally brewed with noble hops and unique yeast varieties since 1986. Our brewers master the processes of top fermentation, natural lagering and secondary fermentation with expert mastery. Gulden Draak is a living beer and has a long-lasting flavor evolution. The brewing process consists of several stages where there is a constant need for attention, quality and passion for the beer. The classic Gulden Draak is easy to drink as an aperitif, dessert or just when you have time to enjoy. This "barley wine" harmonises perfectly with and in stews and with a Ghent stew in particular. It also gives added value to sauces with red meat such as bordelaise and is also ideal as a dessert beer, especially with dark chocolate.

1784 was the year when Jan Baptist De Bruyne laid the brewing foundations of Van Steenberge. There is no better tribute to the brewery’s founder than our Baptist beers. Beers brewed with modern techniques and with respect for our rich history.  Baptist White is a high fermentation white wheat beer that is lightly refreshing with a touch of spice.
