Event description

Event description

Join us for a focus group for the review of the Disability Discrimination Act (the Act).

This focus group is for people with disability from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds. We want to hear your views and experiences.

The session will be co-facilitated by a CALD person with disability, to ensure culturally responsive and culturally safe engagement.

The session will run for about 90 minutes. What you share will help the Australian Government improve the Act.

A representative from the Attorney-General's Department may join the session to listen.

This is one of 8 focus groups being held with different communities, so that many voices are included.

What the focus group is about

The Australian Government is reviewing the Disability Discrimination Act.

We want to know how the Act can:

  • better stop discrimination against people with disability

  • support inclusion and equal rights

  • reflect the experiences of people from CALD backgrounds.

This review is happening because of recommendations from the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability.

What we want to hear from you

In the focus group, we would like to hear your ideas about:

  • how disability and disability discrimination should be defined in the Act

  • what changes could help stop discrimination before it happens

  • how the Act can help people with disability take part in public life (for example, at work or school) and what adjustments may be needed

  • how the Act could protect people from unfair treatment or offensive behaviour

  • other issues, such as complaints involving more than one type of discrimination (for example, disability and race), assistance animals, disability standards, access to services, or action plans

  • any other ideas or experiences you want to share.

Accessibility

You will be asked if you need any accessibility support when you register.

If you need language translation or interpretation for the session, please let us know when registering.
