RESCHEDULED Disability Sector Cultural Inclusion and Communication Training

This event has passed Register

Event description

Disability service providers are funded to provide an equitable service. This includes supporting and communicating effectively with participants and co-workers from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds.

While many disability sector workers engaged with CALD population groups strive to work in an appropriate manner they lack confidence when it comes to working with interpreters, lack knowledge in particular cultural sensitivities related to disability and have limited awareness of the variety of tools and resources available to them.

This workshop will provide an opportunity for all participants to increase their knowledge, identify appropriate tools and resources and build confidence to work competently and respectively with people from CALD backgrounds.

Learning outcomes include increased knowledge of:

  • The barriers that exist for CALD people with disability to access disability services and NDIS
  • The different values and expectations when providing support to participants from CALD backgrounds
  • Where to find relevant CALD resources so we can keep participants and co-workers safe from COVID-19
  • How to effectively communicate with people from CALD backgrounds using professional interpreters

All participants will receive:

  • Full notes and presentation
  • Access to resources
  • Certificate of attendance

The workshop will be facilitated by Josie Prioletti, Catalyst Training and Disability Services and is fully funded through NDS on behalf of the Victorian Government, Department of Families, Fairness and Housing as part of the Safer and Stronger Project.

Workshops will be conducted face to face where COVID restrictions allow and in a COVID safe manner. Any COVID restrictions that impact the running of these rescheduled face to face sessions will result in the workshop going ahead online as a zoom interactive meeting the same date and time. As this will involve interaction with the trainer the number will remain capped with a waiting list for any cancellations.
Online details will be provided to all registered participants if these are needed.
