Event description

Do the words "white supremacy" make you shift in your seat?

What about "white supremacy culture?"

In this session, we will talk about how we learn white supremacy culture. We are socialized from birth to believe that certain ways to do things are right. We might even say "everyone knows. . . "

Often those customs, expectations and "right way to do it" are all wrong when it comes to equity and inclusion in nonprofit workplaces.

With 600 years of learned oppression in our history, white supremacy culture manifests itself in nearly every aspect of nonprofit work. If we want to truly live out our values of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging, we must deepen that reflection and take action.

In this interactive session, we'll introduce the characteristics of white supremacy culture (as outlined by Tema Okun) in nonprofits. We'll also review an example that is all-too-common but often misunderstood. There will also be opportunities to apply the learning in your context.

Finally, we'll offer next steps to continue the process of disrupting white supremacy culture, both personally and systematically.

Note: as some of the conversation is sensitive, we don't record these sessions.
