Diversity Fest Lunch & Learn: Age in the Workplace

Online Event
Add to calendar

Mon, 21 Sep, 10pm - 11pm EDT

Description

Join us for a Lunch & Learn hosted by UNSW's Diversity & Inclusion team about the impact of age in the workplace!

Age continues to play a quiet but powerful role in shaping working lives, as age-based assumptions continue to determine who is seen as capable, valued, and "ready". Decisions about recruitment, development, and promotion are often influenced by beliefs connected to age-based assumptions. Over time, these judgements accumulate, affecting support networks and an individual's ability to fully participate at work.

This Lunch & Learn will be held as a panel discussion, with members of the UNSW staff community, UNSW students, and the UNSW Ageing Futures Institute. We will discuss how age-based assumptions affect employees at all ages.

We will also share some insights from a recent study into employee experiences of age inclusion in the workplace conducted by Diversity Council Australia (DCA). The research shows that age-based exclusion is rarely experienced in isolation - it commonly intersects with other attributes such as gender, race/ethnicity, disability, and personal circumstances, such as caring responsibilities.
