Students Exposed to Trauma, Maltreatment, & Neglect:

Getting the Healing Going and the Learning Happening

This 3-part virtual series focuses on trauma, maltreatment and the neglect of children and youth and its profound effect on their social, emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and academic development. Children and youth with disabilities experience maltreatment at significantly higher rates than children without disabilities.

To better support our students, educators need to understand how to observe, report and prevent maltreatment, what is meant by trauma, maltreatment, and neglect and how its effects are expressed by students in our classroom. For traumatized students to function optimally and get the most out of school, educators must know what it takes to develop resiliency and then apply these strategies to create a classroom/school environment that supports learning.

This series of virtual presentations provides a basis for educators, administrators, and support staff to take an active role in supporting all students.

Each session is approximately 75 minutes long. Registration is for all three sessions. You will receive a link to each recorded session as well as links to all of the handouts and resources talked about in the video.

Session 1-

"Behaviors in the Classroom: How to recognize, report, and prevent trauma caused by maltreatment"

Presented by

• Harold Johnson, Ed.D., a former professor of special education at Michigan State University and Kent State University, has worked as a teacher, school administrator and university professor in the field of Deaf Education from 1971 until 2013. In 2006, Dr. Johnson initiated a nation-wide collaborative effort to understand, document, prevent and respond to the maltreatment of children with disabilities. This work included the collaborative development of the Hands & Voices O.U.R. Children Project and the 2018 CEC Policy on the Prevention of and Response to Maltreatment of Children with Disabilities.

"Trauma-informed Lens: What does it take to develop resiliency in students?"

Presented by

• Rachel Walker, MA, LMFT is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and EMDR Consultant specializing in the treatment of trauma and dissociation. In addition to treating clients from her office in Oakland, CA, Rachel also trains and provides consultation to mental health professionals, interns, clinics, and non-profits throughout the US. In 2020, Rachel created TraumaRecoveryStore.com, an online platform designed to help demystify and destigmatize complex trauma. The website provides simple, hands-on tools for making treatment and recovery more transparent and approachable. Rachel’s deepest desire is to inspire and provide hope to survivors and the professionals who work with them!

"In the Trenches at Ground Zero: Trauma-informed Supports and Strategies for Protecting and Empowering Your Students"

Presented by

• Kelly M. Carrero, Ph.D., BCBA, LBA-TX is an Associate Professor with tenure in the Psychology & Special Education Department at Texas A&M University—Commerce. She has served culturally and linguistically diverse children and youth with exceptionalities and behavioral concerns in a variety of settings. Her research projects serve as a vehicle for positive social change and advocacy for children identified with exceptionalities and challenging behaviors (including Autism Spectrum Disorders). Specifically, she is interested in identifying and examining culturally responsive and socially valid practices in research practices and service delivery. Dr. Carrero serves her profession as a reviewer for several journals and an active member of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) and its respective divisions.
