Description

A panel conversation on how art surfaces hard histories, sparks difficult conversations, and connects communities across divides - plus networking with fellow DMV creatives!

Art has a unique power to connect people and raise critical perspectives. It creates space for conversations between neighbors, across generations, across political lines, across identities - even when there are unresolved conversations and disagreements.

With America marking its 250th anniversary and DC's own identity increasingly at the center of national debate, this feels like the right moment to ask what role art plays in those harder conversations. For July's DMV Creative Chats, we've brought together three practitioners who work at the intersection of art, community, and difficult histories - from public art and performances, to grassroots organizing and civic dialogue.

Together, they can speak to how art surfaces the histories we'd rather skip over, how communities sit with what gets surfaced, what it takes to build spaces where those conversations can actually happen, and what role artists play in shaping how we understand where we've been and where we're headed.

  • James Albright - Mason District Arts Council and Artomatic, building community through public art in Northern Virginia.

  • Nehemiah Dixon III - Project Create and contemporary artist, cultural strategist, and community advocate using public art to confront difficult histories across the DMV.

  • Philippa Pham Hughes - artist and curator of Heurich House Museum's A [New] American Dream, using art to spark civic dialogue on the American Dream.

Join us for the conversation - and stick around after the panel for open networking with fellow DMV creatives.

The evening runs from 6:00 - 8:00 pm, with doors opening at 6:00 for refreshments and casual conversation. The panel kicks off at 6:30, followed by audience Q&A and open networking.

We're gathering at the Heurich House Museum - the historic 1894 mansion of German immigrant brewer Christian Heurich, now home to A [New] American Dream, a summer-long series of gatherings marking America's 250th anniversary and asking who gets to claim the American Dream, and who's been left out of it.

This event is presented in partnership with Heurich House Museum, as part of their A [New] American Dream series. The series is in partnership with Southwest BID, MNCPPC, Theater Alliance, and Golob Art.

About the Series

DMV Creative Chats is an approachable, region-wide monthly series of arts sector discussions and connection-points for DMV creative professionals. Each event brings together artists, cultural leaders, creative sector professionals, and the public for engaging conversation about the creative sector - followed by relaxed networking and community-building with light refreshments.

The combination of inquisitive panel conversations with casual socializing is designed to foster connections between creative professionals, advance the regional arts policy dialogue, and support the DMV cultural economy.

We're just getting started, and we want this series to reflect and serve the community it's built for. If you'd like to suggest a future topic, be considered as a panelist, or find out how to get more involved - we'd love to hear from you.
