Do Bamboo: Traditional Japanse Bamboo Craft (Takezaiku)
Description
Join us for a morning of craftsmanship, mindfulness, and connection. Led by artist and craftsman David Duval-Smith, this workshop offers a quiet, meditative space to explore the traditional art of bamboo crafting and create a functional everyday piece with your own hands.
Event Details:
Design and handcraft a unique, one-of-a-kind bamboo utensil using traditional Japanese hand tools, embracing a process designed to connect you with the soul of things.
No prior experience in woodworking or craft is needed.
Guided by David’s 27 years of expertise working as an artist and craftsman in Japan, this workshop introduces you to the philosophy of the Japanese tea ceremony where small daily acts are treated with reverence and intention. Working with locally harvested Japanese running bamboo (Ma-Dake), you will learn to use hand knives, chisels, gouges, and rasps to shape a piece that is light, strong, warm to the touch, and made to last a lifetime.
What to Bring:
All bamboo, hand tools, and materials will be lovingly provided. Just bring your curiosity and an appreciation for simple, satisfying handcrafting.
