Don Ricardo Workshop
Event description
Kurinuki with Don Ricardo
Transform a block of clay into a dynamic and unique textural form through the Japanese carving technique of kurinuki. Learn the traditional Japanese hand building technique of kurinuki with Don Ricardo in this one day workshop. Kurinuki is a subtractive method that involves carving, hollowing out, and shaping from a solid block of clay, resulting in unique finishes.
Don Ricardo, a self-taught Australian ceramicist, embarked on his artistic journey through a diverse exploration of creative mediums, encompassing kinetic sculpture, furniture making, painting and menswear design. Driven by an insatiable curiosity and a desire for experimentation, he embraced a hands-on approach, sourcing his own clays, fabricating tools from salvaged materials, and developing glazes formulated from a unique blend of rusty metal, ash, and remnants of past ceramic endeavours, reflecting his unconventional and experimental approach to his craft.
Course Outcome: Make a cup and a vase using this technique-if participants have time, make more pieces
