Double Featch: Media into Madness

Featuring Dog Day Afternoon (1975) & Natural Born Killers (1994)

Between Two Worlds Studios presents a Double Featch that dives headfirst into America’s obsession with violence and the media’s role in shaping it. These two films don’t just critique the spectacle—they’re part of it.

Sidney Lumet’s Dog Day Afternoon retells a real 1972 bank robbery turned hostage situation, where news crews, police, and curious onlookers surrounded the scene as it unfolded live. The robbers became performers, the public became the audience, and a private crisis became national theater. It was a glimpse into the emerging media circus of the '70s, shaped by stories like Attica, Watergate, and Vietnam.

Two decades later, Oliver Stone’s Natural Born Killers captures a world where the circus has become the main event. With its hyper-stylized, channel-surfing aesthetics, Stone’s film follows a pair of celebrity serial killers as their spree is broadcast and mythologized in real time. It’s a satire so sharp it inspired real-world violence and lawsuits.

Both films examine how the very presence of news media at volatile events turns chaos into performance. Spectacle becomes narrative, and narrative becomes reality—blurring the lines between documentation and entertainment, between spectator and perpetrator.

These are films that don’t just comment on the media circus—they invite you inside the tent!
