Great of heart, mighty of spirit and a champion of the University for all of its days. Dr Bernard 'Bernie' Curran AM was an integral part of the University of Newcastle for more than 50 years; as a student, rugby player, sports leader, academic, mentor, fundraiser, alumnus, donor, researcher and, most of all, a compassionate friend to many.
He embodied the meaning of the word philanthropy and inspired many others to have a ‘love for humankind’. So many of us were touched by his warmth, encouragement and generosity of spirit over the years, both in his home ground of Newcastle and further afield.
Bernie has left an enduring legacy. He was deeply committed to community engagement and sport at the University. He advocated tirelessly for equitable access to higher education and was passionate about the power of philanthropy, alumni volunteerism and mentorship of students.
Together with Bernie’s family, the University of Newcastle is honoured to host a celebration of Bernie's life to acknowledge the indelible impact he had on our community.

Dr Bernard Curran AM Memorial Fund
To celebrate Bernie’s life and the incredible impact he had on our communities, the University of Newcastle has established the Dr Bernard Curran AM Memorial Fund.
The Fund will provide an annual named Shaping Futures Scholarship to support our students from diverse backgrounds who have overcome barriers to education.
Bernie was a passionate advocate for our students and a mentor to many and it is our aspiration that the Dr Bernard Curran AM Memorial Fund will carry on his philanthropic legacy through an enduring scholarship that changes lives.
The University has made a commitment to the fund and we invite our alumni, staff and broader community to join us in honouring Bernie and the passions and values he stood for by contributing to the Dr Bernard Curran AM Memorial Fund.
