With the impending COP26 to be held in Glasgow in November this year, you are invited to hear Dr Mahendra Kumar speak about his first-hand experience of participating at COP conferences. Dr Kumar has represented many Pacific Governments at COP conferences and related meetings.
Dr Kumar is a senior climate change specialist with experience in climate change, development, energy, and environment programs in Asia-Pacific and Africa. He is currently Honorary Associate Professor at the Institute of Climate Change, Energy & Disaster Solutions (ICEDS), Fenner School of Environment & Society, at ANU, Canberra. He is also an Honorary Research Fellow with the Pacific Centre for Environment & Sustainable Development, at the University of the South Pacific (USP), Fiji.
Dr Kumar has been a Technical Specialist in Climate Change for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) based in Nairobi. He has served as a Climate Diplomacy Adviser to the Republic of Marshall Islands (RMI) President’s Office and assisted with the development of Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs) for Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Tuvalu, and Timor Leste. He has also worked with the Australian Government’s Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency (DCCEE) and assisted in the development of the Australian Government’s climate change adaptation initiative (ICCAI) for the Pacific and Timor-Leste.
Dr. Kumar holds a PhD in Environmental Physics from the University of Nottingham, UK, and a BSc from USP, Fiji. He has also held fellowships at PIDP, East West Centre (Hawaii); University of Boston (US); ICRISAT (India); CSIRO (Australia) and International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) & Third World Academy of Sciences, Italy. Dr Kumar has authored over 50 publications including refereed papers, technical reports, conference proceedings, and technical papers.
