Drawing Portals: Graphite Friction and Fabrication
A one-off drawing and creative practice workshop this Labour Weekend.
Join Kerry Francis, architect and lecturer at Unitec's School of Architecture, to explore the possibilities of frottage (graphite rubbing) techniques far beyond the basics.
After an introduction to Max Ernst’s use of frottage, you'll discover the surrounding area to create rubbings from manhole covers and other surfaces, locating patterns and forms hidden within the urban environment.
Back at the Museum, work these collected impressions into original drawings, developing guided compositions inspired by the textures or by the imaginative idea of manhole covers as portals to other worlds.
Whether you're an experienced artist or a beginner, this workshop offers a fresh approach to observation, experimentation and drawing, encouraging new ways of seeing and responding to the built environment.
All materials are provided, and the session will be delivered in a relaxed studio environment with guidance tailored to individual skill levels.
