Art practices reconnect us to the natural world and help us to imagine different scenarios and futures. However arts and culture are often missing from strategic plans addressing climate change, environmental disaster and how we, as communities and a society, change.

This day is devoted to identifying creative skills and how they can be applied to big systems projects to accelerate action to address the Climate and Ecological Emergency. Please bring your own big (crazy) ideas to share.

Led by Pippa Bailey (Cultural Gardeners, NSW) and Scotia Monkivitch (Creative Recovery Network, QLD) with Deborah Hart (CLIMARTE, VIC) and various local guests.

This is the first day of 3 days exploring Creative Transformation and we invite artists, cultural workers, environmental actors and passionate citizens to join us for the Creative Transformation talks/ workshops.

Connecting networks and actions in South Australia to other activities across the country, our focus is determinedly local and led with participants.

Lineup

Pippa Bailey, Cultural Gardeners

Pippa Bailey is an independent producer/director/consultant based on Wangal Land in Sydney. She started her career as a performer and reporter/producer with SBS TV, held leading creative roles in the UK, and has worked as Senior Producer with Performing Lines, Sydney Festival and in the First Nations team at Carriageworks. Pippa co-produces work with Narungga Kaurna leader Jacob Boehme and Kuku Yalanji artist Henrietta Baird, learning how to practice First Nations First. Pippa co-convenes the Cultural Gardeners - Arts Alliance for Climate Justice with CLIMARTE and advocates for the importance of arts and culture in addressing Ecological Crisis. She is Vice President of IETM International Performing Arts Network and slow travels the world, rehearsing a liveable future.
Scotia Monkivitch, Creative Recovery Network

Scotia is Executive Officer of the Creative Recovery Network, advocating and supporting the role of culture and the arts in disaster preparedness, response and recovery. Scotia has a broad range of professional experiences in the community arts and cultural development sector, specialising in training, mentoring, strategic planning, project management, research and facilitation of community cultural development programs and strategies. Scotia has a performance background spanning 25 years in theatre, devised performance, and coordination of projects and theatrical productions, installation performance, film, live-art and online exchanges. She established the Australian chapter of the Magdalena International Project which gives voice and recognition to women in theatre. Creative Recovery Network is a not-for-profit organisation working to develop and embed the vital role of culture, creativity and the arts in Australia’s disaster management systems. CRN approach is relational, people-centred and future focussed, underpinned by a framework of respect, engagement and self-determination.
Deborah Hart, CLIMARTE

Deborah Hart is a climate and environment focussed creative producer and author based in Naarm (Melbourne). She is a co-founder, the current Chair and Creative Director of CLIMARTE. CLIMARTE’s work harnesses the power of the arts to inform, engage and inspire ambitious, evidence based action on the Climate Emergency. Established in 2010 to bring together a broad alliance from across the arts, humanities and sciences, CLIMARTE is founded on the best available science. Our work helps mobilise communities to demand immediate, effective and creative policy action to restore a climate capable of sustaining all life. As the scientific facts, data and evidence (as well as daily news reports) show, the world is already in advanced stages of a Climate Emergency. At this late stage, maintaining life as we know it on Earth requires global economies to transition to zero emissions while at the same time drawing down legacy carbon at emergency scale and speed, before 2030.

We are arts and cultural workers deeply concerned with taking action on the converging planetary climate and ecological crises. As you will be aware, humanity faces the combined catastrophes of: climate breakdown, mass extinction of vital biodiversity and the rapid degradation of critical ecosystems. Australia is at the forefront of these crises. Alongside real zero carbon emission targets, shortening supply chains and regeneration agendas; we believe that artists and the cultural sector must take a leading role in social transition to mitigate further devastation, adapt to a warming climate and converging crises. Accelerated action is urgently needed.

We believe it is vitally important that our approach is uniquely Australian to respect and forefront the great diversity of First Nations people across Australia whose 65,000 years+ of continuous culture honours a unique relationship and responsibility for Country. There are many cultural actors around the world to align with and we believe these allegiances will be stronger if we start by reconciling with our past, following First Nations people's lead, consolidating relationships and action in our places, on this unceded land.

Co-convened by Pippa Bailey and CLIMARTE with support from Arts Front we meet monthly online to generate action and support people engaged in this work.
