About this session:

  • Early medical abortion is a safe, legal and common procedure. In Australia, early medical abortion encompasses the use of two medications, mifepristone and misoprostol, to end a pregnancy up to nine weeks of gestation. Medical abortion may be preferred to surgical abortion as it is more affordable, less invasive and accessible in primary care settings.
  • Access barriers still remain for people seeking early medical abortion, with less than 10% of GPs in Australia registered to prescribe medical abortion and even fewer doing so in primary care.
  • This forum will increase your knowledge of early medical abortion provision, including necessary steps to establishing service provision, and introduce professional networks available to support implementation of medical abortion provision at your organisation.

Experts speaking at this event include:

At the end of this session, you will have a better understanding of:

  • Early medical abortion, including the process for prescribing, dispensing and supporting patients through the procedure,
  • Experiences of establishing an early medical abortion practice in community health settings,
  • Referral pathways for post-procedure presentations,
  • Patient pathways to accessing abortion healthcare (including how to list your practice as a service provider),
  • Opportunities for further professional development and training, including the Royal Women's Hospital Clinical Champions Project e-modules and MSI Australia's MS-2 Step training.

For more information please contact the organisers.

*Doctors, nurses, midwives, pharmacists and others who practice outside of Victoria (or Australia) are most welcome to join this series of events.
