Ecological Tour of Spring Plains Nature Conservation Reserve
Description
Join us for a free expert-led ecological tour of the Spring Plains Nature Conservation Reserve in Heathcote and learn about this Box-Ironbark forest, its conservation challenges and how we are working to improve the ecological function of the forest.
Biolinks Alliance is a local conservation not-for-profit organisation that works to restore and reconnect large landscapes across Central Victoria by partnering with and building the capacity of other environmental groups and networks. Our ecologists have conducted works in the Spring Plains Reserve to improve the ecological function of the forest, especially with the aim to improve water retention and soil health for a functioning forest and healthy habitat. In this tour our expert team will explain the challenges faced by these heavily disturbed areas of Box-Ironbark forest throughout the Goldfields and demonstrate the interventions carried out and the ongoing monitoring we conduct to assess the health of the forest, track key species and examine the effectiveness of the intervention techniques.
This is a chance to get to know your local landscape, learn about the plant and animal species found in the forest and get up close to some rare beauties via our Sugar Glider monitoring cameras. Attendance is free, but registration is essential and please cancel your ticket if you can no longer attend as places are limited.
A light morning tea will be provided at the conclusion of the tour.
This program of the Regional Drought Resilience Planning program is supported by Biolinks Alliance, through funding from the Australian Government’s Future Drought Fund and the Victorian Government.
FAQs
- Is the event family-friendly?
Yes. Although the information will be geared more towards adults, kids are very welcome to come along and our friendly team will help them discover some of the forest's hidden wonders. All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and supervised at all times.
- What should I wear?
This tour will involve walking across the forest floor without formed tracks, so solid closed footwear is strongly advised, as well as long pants for protection against sticks and the unlikely but always possible presence of snakes. Sun protection is also recommended.
- What level of fitness is required?
This is a walking tour across uneven ground, not necessarily on formed tracks, so you should have a sufficient level of fitness and mobility to sustain this for a couple of hours, although the walking will be at a sedate pace and not strenuous.
- I don't know much about ecology, can I still join?
Of course! This event caters to people of all levels of ecological knowledge, whether you are a complete novice or an expert looking to get into more detail. If you are looking to expand your understanding of forest function and how ecosystems work in your local landscape, this is a perfect starting point. You'll also get to learn about some of the lesser-known creatures that inhabit our area and learn the names of some common trees and plants indigenous to Central Victoria.
- Is this an accessible event?
Unfortunately as the tour involves walking over uneven ground through the forest, it is not wheelchair-accessible and may be challenging for people with limited mobility.
- Do I need to bring anything?
As the tour runs for a couple of hours and involves some walking, we recommend you bring plenty of water to stay hydrated.
