What might we hear if we listen beyond the human?

Écologies Résonantes brings together violin, contemporary composition and sound design for an evening exploring the ways music can become a form of ecological attention.

Australian violinist and artistic researcher Dr Anna McMichael joins composer and artistic researcher Dr Felicity Wilcox for a programme moving between forests, oceans, ice and memory. Through solo violin, improvisation, composition and field recording, the evening considers sound not simply as music, but as a vehicle for expression for other species and environments.

The programme features Felicity Wilcox’s violin solos, To the Sea - commissioned for violinist Adrain Biemmi for the ground-breaking inaugural ANAM Set In Australia, and Currawong Call - a graphic score-based piece for flexible instrumentation and Wilcox’s recordings of currawongs near her Blue Mountains home, that draws on Pauline Oliveros’ concept of ‘deep listening’ as a response to nature.  Anna will also present Inspired by the Weddell Seal, an ongoing artistic research project developed through her Climate Futures Artist Fellowship at the State Library of Victoria. Combining violin improvisation with underwater recordings of Weddell seals from McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, the work opens a sonic encounter with one of the world's most complex marine vocalists. Alongside custom sound design and field recordings developed by Anna McMichael, Felicity Wilcox and Earthly Futures.

During the performance, Anna and Felicity will join Earthly Futures director, Victoria Pham, for a conversation about artistic research, field recording, animal communication and the possibilities of listening as an ecological practice.

Biographies

Anna McMichael is an Australian violinist and artistic researcher with an international performance career spanning more than 30 years. She is Classical Convenor and Head of Strings at the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music at Monash University in Melbourne. Over 17 years in Europe, Anna performed with the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and London Sinfonietta, as well as ensembles including ASKO/Schönberg Ensemble and Ensemble Modern. She has appeared at major European festivals and premiered works by leading international composers. Her work increasingly brings together performance, artistic research and ecological listening, including her ongoing research into the vocal worlds of Antarctic Weddell seals.

Dr Felicity Wilcox is an award-winning Australian composer whose work spans contemporary classical music, opera, screen music and interdisciplinary practice. Her compositions have been performed internationally by artists and organisations including the Philadelphia Orchestra, Bang on a Can Festival, Sydney Opera House, Melbourne Recital Centre and Sydney Festival. Her work has also featured across international film festivals including Venice, Berlin, Toronto, Paris and Tokyo. Felicity is an Adjunct Research Fellow at the University of Technology Sydney and lives between Paris and unceded Darug Country in the Blue Mountains, NSW.
