Matt Vickers from Snowgum Financial Services will discuss the final descent in the disinflation flightpath.

Will the plane land safely?

Since mid-2023, Matt has held a non-consensus view that the US and Australian economy face an elevated risk of succumbing to recession in late 2024, or early 2025. While he accepts timing markets is impossible, Matt will lay out his framework for why risks appear elevated. This framework also helps explain why a recession did not emerge in 2023 or early 2024. The presentation will be 45mins in length, with a further 15mins for a Q&A discussion.

The presentation will cover:

• Economic update.
• Where are we in the business cycle.
• Unemployment and inflation – The Phillips curve gets kinky.
• Australia labour market and the Kiwi in the coal mine.
• Why might a recession be avoided:
  • Are interest rates all that restrictive?
  • Could interest rates cuts arrive sooner than expected?
  • How strong is the US consumer?
  • Will China stimulate?
• Even a mild recession is dangerous for risk assets.

About Matt

Matt Vickers founded Snowgum Financial Services in 2015 and manages considerable capital on behalf of clients. Prior to this Matt was an adviser with a leading boutique wealth management firm in Sydney. Matt holds a Bachelor of Economics, Master of Applied Finance, is a Certified Financial Planner and Tax (financial) Adviser.
