About the Lancet Commission on Clinical Obesity:
Endorsed by 75 medical organisations worldwide, the Commission on Clinical Obesity includes 56 leading international experts. The commission's report proposes a major overhaul of how obesity is diagnosed, moving beyond BMI, to establish when obesity should be considered a chronic disease (clinical obesity). The work addresses important limitations of the traditional definition and diagnosis of obesity that hinder effective clinical practice and healthcare policies, ultimately resulting in individuals with obesity not receiving the care they need. By introducing a new, medically coherent framework for disease diagnosis, the Commission is poised to settle the ongoing dispute around the idea of obesity as a disease, which has been at the heart of one of most controversial and polarising debates in modern medicine.
