Effectively strategies for the secondary school setting

Professional Development General Workshop

This is a General Workshop that has been developed for Secondary Teachers who have a solid understanding of autism and want to increase their repertoire of effective strategies to support students on the autism spectrum specifically in the high school setting.

The session acknowledges that the high school journey is very different to that of the primary school journey. The skills and attitudes developed in high school will set a foundation for post school opportunities, making support in the high school years so important. The content will give educators the knowledge and practical skills to effectively support students on the spectrum at high school.

Topics include:

  • The Learner Profile of students on the spectrum;
  • Organisation and self-management strategies;
  • Effectively differentiating the curriculum;
  • Enhancing communication;
  • Supporting social interaction and social conflict;
  • Positive behaviour strategies; and
  • Understanding sensory processing and the impact on the student.

NB: The content of this session is the same as the strategies component of the Understanding autism and effective strategies for secondary teachers

Suitable for professionals supporting individuals between the ages of 13-18.

All participants will receive a certificate with the workshop title, the number of hours and will state that the training links to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (where appropriate).

If this workshop is full, please contact Emma Bennett on ebennett@autismsa.org.au.

Professional Workshops are designed for any individuals who support an individual on the autism spectrum on a professional or volunteer basis. The workshops provide examples and strategies that are relevant for professionals.
