What is Tier 2 intervention?
Tier 2 intervention refers to small group intervention that seeks to close the gap between student struggles and where they should be in terms of their year level literacy standards. Unfortunately, for many reasons, far too many students struggle with learning to read which is evident in parent and teacher conversations and our nationwide data. However, we know that implementing a school wide Response to Intervention framework with robust systems in terms of assessment, data analysis, tiered instruction and progress monitoring, we can significantly minimise the number of students that do not become successful readers and spellers. Tier 2 small group instruction is a big piece of this puzzle.
In this in-person session you will learn:
- What universal screeners will support you to identify students at risk in literacy
- How to identify which of the three reading difficulty profiles your student/s fall under
- Essential considerations for intervention in primary and lower secondary schools
- The difference between evidence based and evidence informed intervention
- Where educators often go wrong in the intervention space
- Recommendations for oral language interventions for the school setting
- Specific evidence based fluency interventions for reading accuracy, rate and expression
- The how and what of setting SMART targets for Tier 2 intervention
- Examples of an evidence informed intervention planning template for word reading and comprehension difficulty profiles
- The how, what and when of progress monitoring using normed tools
- How to embed a Targeted Literacy Cycle into your class to set short term goals and sprints for maximum learning impact
- How to embed high expectations into your intervention approaches with actual case studies of schools that have achieved incredible results
- Considerations for a multidisciplinary team that oversees the progress of students in the school
- Recommendations for further reading and listening
- Suggestions for whole school logistics in terms of intervention- number of students, dosage, response-opportunity and timetabling!
This session could be good for you if..
You are a teacher, final year practicing teacher, Principal, Assistant Principal, experienced Education Assistant, parent with a basic understanding of phonics, interventionist, teachers in lower secondary English and the inclusive education space.

This is a 3.5 hour in-person session, with afternoon tea and refreshments included. Arrival 2.45pm for afternoon tea, with a prompt 3.15pm start.
