Event description
2 Sessions - Thursday 6th November and Thursday 13th November, 4-5:30pm.
At The Shepherd Centre, we acknowledge the significant importance of family members – both immediate and extended in a child’s development. The Empower Me program is designed for carers, extended family members and family friends of children with any degree of permanent hearing loss. The sessions aim to better equip attendees to support the child’s everyday learning potential as well as building capacity, understanding and resilience within their wider community.
During the program, our team of Audiologists, Children and Family Counsellors and Listening and Spoken language specialists delve into the understanding of how we hear, the impact of hearing loss, how to support the development of communication, and to facilitate participation and inclusion in the child’s local community and everyday life.
This Program will help the participant:
To learn practical strategies that can be used to support children and young people with hearing loss to listen and engage in everyday life
To develop an understanding of how hearing works
To understand about the different types of hearing devices, such as hearing aids and cochlear implants
To learn about the impact of hearing loss on the development of speech, language and social skills
To recognise how to create a good environment for listening at home and in everyday life
To identify ways to support children and young people with hearing loss to have positive and successful social relationships
To have an opportunity to ask questions about hearing loss and the types of services available for children and young people through The Shepherd Centre
