Empowered: Helping Children Feel Safe and Supported in Medical Settings
Event description
EMPOWERED: HELPING CHILDREN FEEL SAFE AND SUPPORTED IN MEDICAL SETTINGS
An online workshop for parents and caregivers
Sunday, July 6
8:00 - 9:30pm (AEST)
Does your child have an upcoming medical appointment or procedure?
Do you want to support them through it in a way that feels connected and empowering?
Whether it’s a dental procedure, day surgery, or hospital stay, medical procedures can be stressful - for both children and parents. The unfamiliar environment, people in uniforms and masks, bright lights, loud noises, and lack of control can understandably bring up fear or resistance for kids.
In this workshop, I’ll share gentle, practical strategies to help your child feel prepared, supported, and emotionally safe - before, during, and after their medical experience.
What we’ll cover:
✔️ How to talk to your child about what to expect (without overwhelming them)
✔️ The power of play - how role play and “power reversal play” can support your child to process emotions such as anxiety and fear
✔️ Ways to familiarise your child with the people and environment
✔️ Supporting your child's big feelings with empathy and connection
✔️ Age-appropriate language to reduce anxiety
✔️ Practical tips to support regulation - yours and theirs
✔️ How to support yourself through it all too
You’ll leave with:
A clear plan for how to prepare your child
Confidence in supporting their emotional needs
A printable checklist you can revisit again and again
The reassurance that you are not alone in this

About Your Facilitator:
Hi, I’m Katie Parker - social worker, postpartum doula, parent educator, play therapist and mum of two. I offer grounded, compassionate support to families navigating the challenges of early parenthood. I’ve supported many families through medical experiences, have lived experience of this myself, and I believe children (and their parents) do best when they feel informed, empowered, and emotionally held.
