Session 1: The Fundamentals of Place Based Capital

Are you looking for ways to foster community-led development, unlock new sources of funding, establish community-owned enterprises, assets, services or build more equitable and resilient local economies and communities?

Start with this first session in the Place Based Capital Learning Series. This session will equip you with the basics of capital—money, assets, and resources—and how they impact local communities and economies. You’ll gain foundational knowledge on place based capital, explore how it differs from traditional systems, and preview key topics for future sessions in the Place Based Capital Learning Series. By the end, you’ll be equipped with the confidence to engage fully in the series and take meaningful action within your community or organisation.

Whether you're a community leader, business owner, council member, economic or social impact professional from a government or non-government organisation, this series will help you support your community, organisation or other communities in achieving these goals. The topics in this series can be applied to a wide range of challenges faced by communities across Australia, from housing affordability and cost-of-living pressures to small business viability and the shift to a sustainable, circular economy.

• Learn the basics of capital: Such as money, assets, and resources and how they impact local communities and economies.
• Gain a foundational understanding of place based capital: Understand how it works, how it differs from traditional systems, and why it’s essential for building resilient, equitable local economies.
• Learn the value of a local capital system: Understand the importance of creating a capital system that serves your community, local businesses, and the environment effectively.
• Explore capital ownership and control: Delve into the importance of community empowerment through ownership and control of local capital.
• Align values with action: Reflect on how capital is used in your community or organisation today, and how principles like place-based, people-centered, local ownership, local leadership, equity, inclusion, and reinvestment can guide better outcomes.
• Preview local capital functions and the other topics in the series: Take an initial look at local capital functions that can help communities to build place based capital systems, providing a roadmap for advancing place-based capital in your community.
• Build confidence for future engagement: Equip yourself to engage with place based capital solutions throughout the series, empowering you to take meaningful action in your community.

• Co-Learning Environment: As a participant, you’ll not only learn from the content but also from your peers. This series emphasises co-learning, where you’ll be part of a shared journey that expands the body of knowledge, strategies and solutions. Through collective insights, discussions, and shared experiences, you will help shape and build on the growing understanding and practical implementation of place based capital.
• Broad Audience Appeal: Designed to benefit anyone involved in community building, economic development, social impact, or other areas of relevance. 
• Flexible Engagement: You can participate in this session on its own or continue through the series to deepen your knowledge.

This module is priced at $250
