Engaging Men & Boys in Violence Prevention
Description
As primary prevention practitioners, we know that effectively engaging men and boys is a crucial part of creating safer and more equitable communities. We recognise men and boys as allies with the capacity to challenge harmful norms, interrupt violence-supportive behaviours and model healthier ways of being.
Most men do not use violence and want relationships and communities built on respect. However, too often, the work of preventing gender-based violence is seen as “women’s work”, and primary prevention messaging doesn’t reach boys and men.
PVT’s two-day Engaging Men and Boys in Violence Prevention workshop is an intermediate-level training aimed at building the capacity of the primary prevention workforce. The workshop focuses on practical ways to involve men and boys in creating safer and more respectful communities. By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
Explain why engaging men and boys is essential to addressing the gendered drivers of men’s violence against women
Understand how ideas about masculinity are shaped by culture and context
Design primary prevention messages and programs that resonate with men and boys
Recognise and respond effectively to passive and active resistance
Apply gender-transformative and intersectional approaches that challenge rigid gender norms and unequal power relations
Implement primary prevention initiatives that are sustainable, evidence-informed and accountable to women.
Engaging Men & Boys in Violence Prevention is a two-day intermediate-level primary prevention of men's violence against women training. Participants require a working understanding of the gendered drivers of men's violence against women, the socio-ecological model, and the characteristics of a primary prevention approach prior to enrolling in this workshop.
