What makes consultations with men more likely to be personally transformative whilst acknowledging the social contexts we live in?

This workshop is for both the new and the experienced who are looking to extend their knowledge and skills with a fresh exploration of ideas we have about who men are, what men can be, and/or who they can become can affects practice. Discussion and exercises are designed to showcase and enhance practice approaches for working with men that encourage both a sense of ethical fulfilment for individual men whilst advocating for men’s way of being that are safer, responsible and more accountable. Drawing from and building on individual therapeutic consultations, group work, research, teaching and training, in this one-day workshop participants will explore and compare contemporary ideas about what might be different, and important to consider when we consult with men. We will explore how the ways we conceptualise people has a profound impact on how we approach problems and what we see as solutions.

Participants are encouraged to bring practice examples to discuss. 

One of the hopes of the workshop is to encourage communities of practice where people can share ideas and grow novel and transformative practice.  The pricing includes access to 4 group practice supervision sessions (dates as indicated).

Adelaide Narrative Therapy Collective are working practitioners opening up accountability conversations with clients, and continuously reviewing and counter-viewing our conversations through client's hopes and actions in their lives. Our therapeutic and theoretical practice is closely aligned to the work of Michael White co-creator of Narrative Therapy (Adelaide based) and Alan Jenkins & co (also Adelaide based) on Invitational practice and restorative justice with violence and abuse.

WHO:

+ Professionals and/or students who work directly or indirectly with men as clients of human services

PRIOR KNOWLEDGE: no specific prior experience or knowledge required.

LIMITED SEATS: to be as collaborative as possible we have limited to 15 places.

DURATION: 7 hours - Professional Development points claimable with PACFA, AASW, ACA, APA etc

LOCATION: Beautiful and Bright Brompton Community Centre: "19 on Green"

No 19, Green Street, Brompton: Training room with kitchen facilities including coffee, tea etc for contribution of $2. A Community Garden to enjoy during the breaks. Plenty of Parking. Bring your own lunch, the Excelsior Pub is a short 3 min walk or Seven Grounds on Hawker St, Bowden is a longer 10 min walk.

The cost of the workshop includes access to 4 attendances at a of series of scheduled 2-hour small group supervision sessions - to sustain practice development and grow ideas in and for practice through conversation with a community of practitioners

DISCLAIMER: This workshop is organised around ideas that have been drawn from work with non-Aboriginal men.  Thus, though Aboriginal men’s lives are impacted by some of the ideas that affect non-Aboriginal men’s lives, it is not considered appropriate or respectful to think these ideas are immediately transferable and run the risk of causing harm if Aboriginal colleagues are not consulted before any applications.
