Dr Stephanie Mallen has 30 years’ experience as a speech pathologist working with children, adolescents and adults who experience communication difficulties. Her experience spans private practice, schools and working with socially disadvantaged groups. She is passionate about social justice and enabling young people to communicate. Stephanie is now a lecturer in Speech Pathology at UniSA who is focussed on how enhanced communication can impact people’s outcomes and our world.

- 1.2 million Australians are affected by a communication disability.
- Up to 90% of young offenders have communication difficulties
- Between 6-10% of all school age children (even higher with socially disadvantaged groups) have communication difficulties - that is 2-3 students in every class.
- Skilful communication can increase engagement and achievement of young people with communication difficulties and change the course of their life.
This 2.5-hour workshop focusses on:
- Detection of communication issues.
- Skilful communication to enhance engagement, safety and outcomes in those with communication issues, particular those with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD).
Who should attend?
- Anyone working with young people, particularly from socially disadvantaged backgrounds.
- This workshop will particularly focus on the potential for teachers, support workers and youth workers to significantly enhance their relationship and outcomes with young people through skilful communication.
