The Case of the Vanishing Geriatrician” presented by Vimmi Panchal, MD, Penn Geriatrics.
The American Geriatrics Society (AGS) has projected that by 2030, the US will need 12,320 geriatrics, however it is likely that there will only be 7580. In the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), only 24% of geriatric fellowship programs were filled as compared to 100% of cardiology and 99.5% of gastroenterology. Why are so few physicians choosing geriatric fellowship programs and what can be done to reverse this trend? Please share your ideas and concerns.
