BRIGER CONDUCTS BRUCKNER

***

The Sydney Youth Orchestra

Conducted by SYO Chief Conductor & AWO Founder, Artistic Director and Chief Conductor, Alexander Briger AO

BRUCKNER Symphony No. 7

***

The second concert in our series, Chief Conductor - Alexander Briger AO returns to follow on from his first foray for the SYO musicians into the monumental sound-world of Anton Bruckner with the 8th Symphony that was performed in 2018.  This performance left both players and audience amazed at the level of achievement from a youth orchestra – successfully conquering one of the longest and grandest works of the symphonic repertoire.

In 2020, his forces take on another Brucknerian Everest, the equally epic Symphony No 7. Written in part as a tribute to Wagner and the greatest immediate success of the composer’s life, the score calls for the addition of four so-called ‘Wagner’ tubas to the already large brass section.

Schooled in the huge Baroque monastery of St Florian and revered as one of the greatest organists of his day, Bruckner’s musical aesthetic reflects the scale of the instrument and the institution: vast spans, monumental solidity, and an almost architectural dimensionality that has had his symphonies described as ‘cathedrals’ in sound.

Get ready for one of the supreme musical journeys through the edifice of the 7th in what will be the year’s sonic spectacular and another watershed in SYO’s development.
