Equity Hui
Event description
Auckland University Women in Science (AUWS) and the Science Equity Committee is proud to announce the Women in Science Hui, an event aimed at fostering dialogue, reflection, and meaningful action within the Faculty of Science.Â
We are inviting AUWS members, science students and staff and allies to support this initiative through active participation. Together, we can create an environment that uplifts and empowers women and gender non-conforming (GNC) individuals in science. This hui is a key initiative in continuing to break down barriers in academia and ensure lasting positive change for students and staff.
AUWS, a student-led club founded in 2021. Our mission is to connect, uplift, and empower women and gender non-conforming students across the Faculty of Science and beyond, offering support, guidance, and professional development opportunities.Â
Through this hui we aim to:
- Enhance Faculty Support – Work with the Faculty of Science to identify actionable steps to better support women and gender non-conforming individuals across all areas in the University.
- Strengthen AUWS Inclusivity – Gather feedback from students and staff to ensure AUWS remains an inclusive and equitable space for all current and prospective members.Â
Hui Structure:
- Duration: 2 hours with breaks for tea/coffee and food. You are welcome to leave and come whenever you please, this is an open-door hui.Â
- Format: Small group discussions will revolve around key prompts such as:
- What support services from the Faculty of Science are you aware of?
- How can the Faculty become more inclusive and equitable?Â
- Feedback will be collected anonymously, and participants are encouraged to share their thoughts with the larger group at the end.
Food & Refreshments:
- Pizza from Presto Pizza (vegan, vegetarian, and meat options available)
- Tea, coffee, and snacks
We aim to create a safe space where everyone is heard, and concrete steps are identified to promote inclusivity and equity. While the focus is on women and GNC individuals, we welcome men and members of other faculties as allies to join and support this initiative.
Join us for an event that promises to spark ongoing dialogue and drive meaningful change within the Faculty of Science at the University of Auckland. This is just the beginning of creating a more inclusive academic environment for all.
Sign up today to help us cater food and ensure we can accommodate everyone. AUWS members who participate will also have the chance to win vouchers as a token of our appreciation!
