Event description

Ka Baird:

Ka Baird is a musician, performer, composer and sound designer based in New York City. They are known for their live performances which include extended voice and microphone techniques combined with electronics and psychoacoustic interplay of flutes and other woodwinds. They create a present tense sound with a vigorous, ritualistic delivery that seeks extreme release through physical exertion and psychic extension. They have worked/collaborated with many other musicians, artists, filmmakers and choreographers, both in structured compositions and in their dedicated practice of improvisation and interdisciplinary work. They are one of the core members of Spires That In The Sunset Rise, founded in Chicago in 2001. "I am obsessed with hyper-presence and physicality. There is an earnest precision, teetering between slapstick and ritual, to the visceral delivery of my sound shaping. I want to spew sound around, much like spit or the exhalation of a breath, deconstructing it as it is dispersed." (artist statement)

Erik Ruin's Ominous Cloud Ensemble:

Erik Ruin’s Ominous Cloud Ensemble is an ever-evolving, collectively-improvising large ensemble for projections and music, led by visual artist Erik Ruin, recently lauded by the New York Times for his “spell-binding cut-paper animations.” Erik manipulates intricate paper-cuts and painted films on overhead projectors to create abstract landscapes and fragmentary scenes that are nonetheless charged with meaning, merging with music that ranges from dark atmospherics to ecstatic peaks of dissonance. Members of the ensemble include a rotating cast of Philly’s finest musicians, who have collaborated with everyone from Anthony Braxton to the Sun Ra Arkestra to Bardo Pond.

Ipek Eginli:

A native of Turkey, Ipek Eginli is an experimental electroacoustic sound artist and improviser who describes her music-making as “a process of a creation and a creation of a process”. Her ever-evolving creative process involves electroacoustic improvisation on piano, voice, and modular synthesizers. Currently, she is working on her debut album to be released in June 2024, combining granular synthesis with elements of extended voice techniques and prepared piano. In 2023, Ipek was awarded a residency at the Westben Centre for Connection & Creativity in Canada and also received the Reiser Atlanta Artists Lab grant from the Alliance Theater as the lead artist for the multimedia project “Hold on To Your Names,”. As a contemporary classical music pianist, she has performed solo, chamber and orchestra concerts at various venues in Turkey, Austria, the Netherlands, Germany, Canada and in many cities in the US including New York, Boston, San Francisco and Atlanta for over two decades. Ipek is the founder and director of a piano academy in north Atlanta and holds a doctoral degree in piano performance from the University of Georgia.
