Building Gender Competency

The National Higher Education Code to Prevent and Respond to Gender-Based Violence, alongside Positive Duty obligations under the Sex Discrimination Act, signals a major shift in how universities are expected to address gender-based harm. Universities are now required not only to respond to incidents, but to take proactive steps to address the underlying drivers of violence, including gender inequality, discrimination, rigid social norms, and entrenched power imbalances.

This webinar explores how curriculum can operate as a key site of primary prevention and institutional change. Drawing on UniSC’s Curriculum Design Framework, Associate Professor Gail Crimmins will examine how gender competency can be embedded across programs of study in ways that strengthen disciplinary learning, ethical judgement, graduate capability, and inclusive educational practice.

The session will also consider the important role Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities disciplines can play in leading this work institutionally and sectorally through curriculum innovation, critical scholarship, and public engagement.

This session will be chaired by Professor Nathan Wise, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences, and Education, at the University of New England will chair this session.
