Term 2 - Bush Tucker - Wednesday 19 June 2024

Join us for an inspiring afternoon to start planning a bush foods patch for your school or centre.

Our Australian bush is full of edible fruits, roots, nuts, seeds and leaves. Peter Cooley from Indigigrow will guide our afternoon workshop to discover some of the bush food plants from our local area and beyond.

The afternoon will include an opportunity to:

Look, feel and taste some bush foods plants.
Learn about traditional and current uses for plants.
Discover which bush tucker plants are local to our area.
Hear tips for setting up and caring for a garden.
Consider how to connect kids to your patch.

Who Should Attend: Open to all teachers and early learning educators in Woollahra, Randwick, and Waverley Council areas.

Location: Paddington Community Garden, Quarry Street, Paddington. The garden is at the end of the road, next to the Trumper Park Tennis Centre.

Parking: Park along Quarry Street or other nearby streets.

Agenda:

3:30pm - Snack and networking - connect with fellow educators while enjoying a snack.
3:45pm - Explore the patch - Check out the bush foods patch in the Paddington Community Garden.
4.00pm - Discover more about bush foods - Talk from Peter Cooley with sample plants suitable for school and early learning centre gardens.
5:00pm - Announcements - Hear updates and announcements from each Council, providing valuable information for your sustainable education initiatives.
5.15pm - Finish - Wrap up the day, leaving inspired and equipped with newfound knowledge for your educational endeavours.

IndigiGrow is a local business, proudly owned and operated by First Hand Solutions Aboriginal Corporation, with deep roots in the community at La Perouse. They offer a range of local native and bush foods plants at their La Perouse and Matraville nurseries.

About our Network

The Eastern Suburbs Sustainable Schools Network (ESSSN) is for educators from early learning to high school. Meeting each term, the Network provides free professional development on a wide range of topics, opportunities to connect with like-minded teachers from other schools and to hear from council about the resources available to schools.

How to claim professional learning credit

Claim teacher professional learning accreditation for attending meetings. Teachers can register their participation through their NESA / Teacher Accreditation / ETAMS account under Elective Professional Development. The Course addresses the following Standards - "Standard 6 Engage in Professional Learning" - 6.2.2, 6.3.2 and 6.4.2.
