Event description

At Body Safety Australia, we know that children deserve childhoods free from violence and educators deserve evidence-based training and tangible support to play their part. Right now, early years educators are being called on to strengthen their child safety practice. We are here to support you. We've created a 2-week Child Safe Standards professional development program for you and your team to build from your foundation, expand your understanding and translate learning into action.

Whether you’re strengthening your understanding of abuse or learning how to speak up when something isn’t right, our evidence-based professional development is here to help you foster safer childhoods and keep children's safety in capable community hands.

*Please note it is compulsory that you have attended our Superstars Professional Development/Webinar Series before attending this.

Child Safe Standards/National Principles (This is session one of a two-part series)

Tuesday 11th November 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Connecting to the purpose

Don’t let the National Principles (or Child Safe Standards) become another policy gathering dust on your shelves! This workshop shares the intention behind the Principles and Standards and how to invite children, families and the team to inform child safety in your environment.

The most effective child safety policies and practices are ones that are owned by the community. This means inviting child participation, engaging parents and caregivers and empowering teams to develop policies and Codes of Conduct. To do these they need to understand their history and background. From there we discuss how to engage diverse voices, from the youngest children to the busiest parent and feel equipped to sit in some courageous and confronting conversations.

Child Safe Standards/National Principles (This is session two of a two-part series)

Thursday 13th November 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

What even is cultural safety?

True child safety is more than policies, gates and ratios. The National Principles and State Standards call for cultural safety for children with marginalised identities. Learn why a nuanced approach is critical to every child safe environment.

Child maltreatment is something that can occur to any child. But some children have greater vulnerabilities to victimisation than others. The Principles and Standards ask that we pay special attention to how we address these risks. This means understanding and addressing the systemic issues facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, children with a disability, children from migrant and refugee backgrounds, LGBTIQ children and children who are unable to live at home.

This workshop will support you in not only understanding and mitigating risk, but also in drawing on the cultural strengths of each of these groups to create a positive approach to child safety.
