    Event description

Join us to celebrate the opening of two new exhibitions: Moiyum wungumbil mugerra bullonga featuring work by Lionel Fogarty and 余白の美: Yohaku no bi (the beauty of empty space) by Elysha Rei.

Lionel Fogarty since the early 2000s has been creating ‘poem paintings’, where viewers are immersed in the language written by his own hand, rather than by the mechanical typeset of publishing. This exhibition Moiyum wungumbil mugerra bullonga features new paintings that connect to Lionel Fogarty’s longstanding commitment to the liberation of voice. This exhibition title translates to ‘waterlily whistle thunder yours’ in Yugambeh language, with the paintings displayed suggesting new and generative ways of reading poetry across cultural spaces.

Located in The Condensery’s Bomb Shelter, 余白の美: Yohaku no bi (the beauty of empty space) is an installation by Japanese Australian artist, Elysha Rei that uses hand cut paper and principles of Japanese garden design to explore transcultural identity, family history and the silent narratives of Japanese-Australian migration experience.
