Expedition: Sunrise Beaver Hike
Event description
Are you an early riser?
Sink your teeth into the Expedition: Sunrise Beaver Hike on Saturday, September 21st from 7:30-9 a.m.!
At Wildwood ACRES Land Trust, you'll get to observe beavers in their natural habitat during their most active hours while watching the sun rise!
The mile-long hike, led by Gavin King, leads to a pond and around the wetland on a trail that's accessible for all ages.
Gavin King is the stewardship assistant at ACRES Land Trust and the caretaker of the Wild Wood Nature Preserve. At ACRES, his role involves anything ranging from invasive species management to installing new parking lots. Before working for ACRES, Gavin worked for the Indiana DNR and continues to pursue his passion for leading events and educating the community.
Gavin will stop at many points along the hike to discuss a brief history of beaver-human interactions including historic uses, fur trade, and parachuting beavers! He will talk about their ecological engineering and show how they can change ecosystems and landscapes to their needs.
Snacks and water for on the trail will be provided, but make sure to bring your binoculars to see the active wildlife! We will have a beaver skull and pelt to see up close as well!
Even if you're not an early riser, you're bound to enjoy the beautiful colors of the morning sky and the chance to see some beavers in action!
This event is underwritten by the Zimmer Biomet Foundation.
