Expiry Date by Jasper Mallette
Event description
Expiry Date is the staged reading and workshop of a brand new piece of trans theatre written by local playwright Jasper Mallette. Come join us for a reading and talkback, and help to develop this important piece of art that celebrates transness!
Expiry Date is a full-length, one-act play about two transmasc people living in an apocalypse, debating on whether or not hormones are essential to their survival. If they are, what happens when they run out and/or expire?
It explores themes of trans resilience and how trans people manage to survive even in the most unlikely circumstances. It poses questions such as; would hormones still be essential to survival if there was no society to enforce gender roles?; how does queer community form?; how can transness vary so widely?; and in what ways do trans experiences exist beyond the gender binary?
Set in an alternate 2020s; what if something like covid had essentially killed off or zombified the majority of the population? It takes place in the rural town Enderby, BC. Beneath, around, and throughout it all, it considers what community and companionship truly means.
