Event description

In this enchanting session, we will delve into the folklore, mythology, and symbolism linked to Elder or Sambucus spp. is a tree that symbolizes transformation, the underworld, renewal, hope, betrayal, blood, fire, and ceremonial magic. We will engage deeply with this tree connecting on a spiritual level to channel the imagery, words, and messages it imparts, serving as a muse for our poetry.

Elder sits squarely in Celtic mythology as a tree to be both feared and honored, and its practical magic, mythology, and medicinal applications are vast. The spirit of Elder is mighty, and communing with Elder for creativity is a fruitful, daring, and riveting pursuit. In this two-hour class, we will delve into the imagery, folklore, and magical properties of the Elder Tree. Following this exploration, we'll learn how to weave these elements into our writing practice. Participants will be guided through a plant meditation and engage with creative writing prompts inspired by the Elder. Together, we'll unleash our storytelling, poetry, and wordsmithing prowess, guided by the spirit of the Elder Mother. Don't forget to bring your favorite journal or notebook.

Since ancient times, plants and trees have been integral to human culture, offering food, medicine, shelter, and spiritual guidance. Many cultures worldwide have developed a profound respect and understanding of plants, viewing them not only as living organisms but also as entities with unique wisdom. This knowledge, passed down through generations, is woven into folklore and legends, creating a rich tapestry of stories about various plants. What messages do plants convey to you? What wisdom might they share?

Our poet, Nora Toomey, will lead participants through a variety of imaginative writing prompts, assisting us in crafting our poems. Inspiration can find its way in a myriad of ways, so this is a chance for you to get your creative juices flowing. Poetry prompts can be of great help when you are trying to find your poetic voice, or trying to step outside your comfort zone.

Together, we'll delve into writing, fostering an appreciation for our deep connection with the plant world. We will conclude the afternoon in a safe sharing circle, offering everyone a chance to share their evolving poetic creations.

This workshop promises to be an engaging, inclusive, and creative journey for anyone eager to deepen their connection with nature and enrich their writing practice.
