Director's Statement - Felix Williamson
I remember vividly seeing the original production of Face to Face on opening night at the Ensemble Theatre in March, 1999. (Before all of my cast were born.)
I had seen dozens of my father's plays and acted in some of them, so I knew what to expect: biting satire, funny one-liners, a great story, political and social reflection, a compact, clever set, music, lights, a cliff hanger at the interval, and a 10 minute shorter second half.
We got the satire and the one-liners… but everything else was very different.
Firstly, someone just walked on stage and turned on the stage lights. There was no set, just 10 chairs. Then a bunch of people who didn’t look like actors wandered onto the stage. I was positive that one of them was just an overly tanned boat builder from the yard next door. He looked lost.
The 10 people sat down and produced what my father has described as pure drama.
No lighting changes, no set changes, no interval, just ten characters duking it out for 90 minutes.
It was fantastic.
It is all based on real conferences my father had witnessed, so its authenticity was without question.
Of his 60 plays, of which I have seen at least 59, this is one of his very best.
It has been wonderful to bring it to life.
(Thanks, Becca).
Enjoy the show.
