Event description

In the face of increasing complexity and polarisation, it is becoming harder for people to move forward together. Facilitation is supposed to help people collaborate, but the two most common methodologies - getting participants to subordinate their interests to the good of the whole or enabling everyone to do their own thing - don’t really work.

Join us at 9 am EST Thursday October 7th to hear about a new approach: FACILITATING BREAKTHROUGH: How to Remove Obstacles, Bridge Differences, and Move Forward Together

Author Adam Kahane offers an alternative to common, bossy top-down or collegial bottom-up approaches: TRANSFORMATIVE FACILITATION cycles back and forth between them. Rather than pushing people to collaborate, the facilitator removes obstacles standing in the way of everyone contributing and connecting equitably. It enables people to bring their whole selves to the process.

Montreal based Adam Kahane is a Director of Reos Partners, an international based social enterprise that helps people move forward together on their most important and intractable issues. Reos Partners has an Australian office based in Melbourne and headed by its Director Stephen Atkinson.

Adam is the author of Solving Tough Problems: An Open Way of Talking, Listening, and Creating New Realities, about which Nelson Mandela said: “This breakthrough book addresses the central challenge of our time: finding a way to work together to solve the problems we have created.” He is also the author of Power and Love: A Theory and Practice of Social Change, Transformative Scenario Planning: Working Together to Change the Future, Collaborating with the Enemy: How to Work with People You Don’t Agree with or Like or Trust. His books have been translated into more than twenty languages.

Sandy Killick, Director of Democracy Matters will host this book launch.  Democracy Matters is a social enterprise using the power of education to make democracy grow between elections.

“Facilitating Breakthrough is thoughtful, reflective, and inspiring. To achieve breakthrough results on high-stakes challenges, facilitators need to raise their game. This book explains how.”

Martin Gilbraith, former Chair, the International Association of Facilitators

This book is for anyone who helps people work together, be it a facilitator, executive, manager, consultant, coach, organiser, mediator, stakeholder, or friend. You can order a copy here.
