Sydney Alliance - Blacktown Council Candidates Forum 2024

Event description

Are you interested in politics done differently? The Sydney Alliance is bringing together members of the Blacktown community, through our organisations, to seek public accountability from local council candidates on housing affordability. It will be run on the principles of organised engagement with decision-makers, clear asks, courtesy and broad-based citizen representation. The Sydney Alliance is a non-party political organisation.

We are also discussing asks on other important issues such as access to clean and affordable energy, public transport, and temporary migrants.

NSW is experiencing a housing affordability crisis which means that we need to find ways to build more homes that suit a diverse range of family types, located in areas where people can thrive.

The NSW government has set targets for new homes to be built in every LGA in Sydney, including Blacktown. By 2029 there will be 21,400 new homes built in Blacktown so we want to make sure development is done in a way that benefits locals, is environmentally sustainable, and creates more affordable homes for lower paid workers to live where they work.

NSW local government elections are being held on 14 September and provide an opportunity to demonstrate public support for more affordable housing so Sydney Alliance is running a candidates forum in Blacktown to try to work with the local council. We will be calling for action on affordable housing, access to clean and affordable energy, the rights of temporary migrants and equitable access to public transport across the LGA. We will be learning more about the issues, asking for community support and seeking commitments from candidates for the upcoming Council election to further the development of a fair and equitable Blacktown Local area.
