Fall Mushroom Foray: 10.3 Trout Lake, WA
Description
Come experience an enchanting and educational day learning about fall mushrooms of the Pacific Northwest.
We will spend time developing a well-rounded understanding of fungi, their structure, function in the environment and how to responsibly forage. Our focus will be on all varieties of mushrooms.
This event is a foray, meaning we will learn about any fall mushrooms we come across, not one particular species alone. However, there will be an emphasis on the identification of any edible mushrooms we come across that day. Ultimately education is the goal, not filling baskets with edibles. The deeper understanding of mushrooms and fungi we have as a whole will in the end, create better foragers of us.
This is a beginner friendly course and perfect for those wanting hands-on experience and guidance as they learn to identify and deepen their appreciation for fungi.
This course will meet near Trout Lake, Washington (average time from Portland, 1 hour 40 minutes), meet location directions given upon registration.
We begin with a welcome then will carpool/caravan from our meet location to our field location. Our field location is generally 20 minutes from our meet location and within the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Thank you to the Forest Service for allowing me permission to run my educational programs within the GPNF.
Requirements:
For this class, folks must be willing and able to walk off trail in the woods, in sometimes rugged terrain. We will not be on even ground or on clear paths the entire time, often walking off-trail and through brush. Class will happen rain or shine, so you must be willing and prepared to spend the day in the rain. You will also be required to obtain an online mushroom permit and bring the printed permit with you to class, link for online permit sent in registration confirmation.
This course is beginner friendly! Bring your curiosity and desire to learn and you'll be good to go. However, a way to prepare for the event would be to watch my 'Mushrooms 101' videos, linked below.

FAQs
- Can I bring my dog/pet?
We prefer that pets do not attend. However, if you have a people friendly animal on a leash (a MUST), with the understanding that some people may have real trauma from dogs and you respect any request to stay distanced from someone while also understanding that you may need to step away from the group to tend to your animal, then exceptions can be made. Underground wasp nests are active and aggressive early fall! Dogs tend to find them more than people!
- Is this a kid friendly event or for adults only?
The event is geared for adults, however older children interested in foraging who don't mind spending hours hiking off trail in the woods (RAIN or shine) are welcome to join. Youth that will be foraging themselves need a ticket for the event. We also have FAMILY FORAY events, check those out!
- I have a baby/toddler and no childcare, can I bring them?
Yes, with the understanding the class is geared for adults, will be off trail, lots of walking and likely raining or cold. Bring a pack or carrying sling. Understand you may miss some of the educational aspects of the class when tending to your child. No cost or ticked required for the infant, but please let me know if you ahead of time.
