Fallen Tree Bush Walk

This walk is nicknamed ‘The Fallen Tree Bush Walk’ following the felling of a very large tree across the track by cyclone Gabrielle. It is a loop beginning and ending part way along Govan Wilson Rd. The walk is approx 16km and follows the ridge along the old Conical Peak Road to take the Te Araroa track down from the ridge to Waiwhiu stream. A gorgeous walk through bush, often thick with birds and song.

Starting at the Te Araroa Track carpark on Govan Wilson Road, a short walk on a wide metal road takes us quickly into bush with occasional window views over the Hauraki Gulf. We will take our time descending down the the Waiwhiu stream. Some of the downhill is steep, and negotiating the fallen tree is challenging, but safe as the track has improved with use. There is one DOC toilet at our lunch stop point. 

After lunching beside the stream the return to the ridge begins along a forestry road next to recently felled hillsides. Then we begin our climb along a disused four-wheel-drive track. After a steep start, the gradient eases and this section of the walk is through pine then returning to native forest.

A treat for anyone well shod and good on their feet. You will need to be fit, in good health and have proper footwear. You will also need plenty of water, hat, layers, snacks and the usual things you would pack for a day hike.

Expect to enjoy a complete break away on this walk in the bush.

Please note this walk is steep in parts, with uneven footing and a good level of fitness and walking boots are required
