Family Mushroom Foray: 10.18 Carson, WA
Description
Come experience an enchanting and educational day learning about fall mushrooms of the Pacific Northwest with your kids in tow!
All forms of Family welcomed!
We will spend time developing a well-rounded understanding of fungi, their structure, function in the environment and how to responsibly forage with kids. Our focus will be on all varieties of mushrooms. This is a beginner and family-friendly course, engaging the kids in the learning will be a priority.
This event is a foray, meaning we will learn about any fall mushrooms we come across, not one particular species alone. However, there will be an emphasis on the identification of any edible mushrooms we come across that day. Ultimately education is the goal, not filling baskets with edibles. The deeper understanding of mushrooms and fungi we have as a whole will in the end, create better foragers of us.
This course will meet 30 minutes north of Carson, Washington, meet location directions given upon registration.
We begin with a welcome then will carpool/caravan from our meet location to our field location, occasionally our meet location is the same as our field location.
Thank you to the Forest Service for allowing me permission to run my educational programs within the GPNF.
Requirements:
For this class, folks must be willing and able to walk on and off trail, we may occasionally walk through brush off trial. Parents/guardians must be willing to carry young children who need assistance.
Class will happen rain or shine, so you must be willing and prepared to spend our time in the rain.
You will also be required to obtain an online mushroom permit for the adults in attendance and bring the printed permit with you to class, link for online permit sent in registration confirmation.
One ticket per person in your family group (excluding infants), space is limited per Forest Service regulations.
Parents/Guardians must come with the understanding that ultimately they are in charge of their child’s safety and comfort. If at any time someone feels they need to take a break or leave early you are free to do so. I do not mind common interruptions from children while I teach these family classes, I have children of my own and am also an elementary educator so my experience allows me to teach through basic interruptions with no worries.
All forms of Family welcomed. This is an inclusive space. Discrimination and disrespect will not be tolerated.
Bring your curiosity and desire to learn and a packing list will be sent to you upon registration. However, another way to prepare for the event would be to watch my 'Mushrooms 101' videos, linked below.

Family Mushroom Foray Agenda
9:00am: Sign in and Welcome at our Meet Location (address given upon registration) 9:00-9:15 We will carpool/caravan to our Field Location. Our field location is generally 10-20 minutes from our meet location and within the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. There is a chance we may not need to drive to a field location for this class, but it is a possibility. 9:30-11:30 After a safety orientation, there will be a mix of collecting, and observing the mushrooms we come across. There will be group instruction time, plus times to look for fungi independently. 11:30 The final half hour will be a group identification session to cover the variety of mushrooms found during the foray. Kids will be given modeling clay during this time to shape their own creative mushrooms, giving the adults a moment to ask questions while the kids are entertained. 12:00: Drive or walk back to our Meet Location.
FAQs
- I'm an adult, I want to attend this event by myself but don't have any kids I'm bringing, can I register?
No, this event was created for families and space is very limited. All tickets are reserved for those attending with youth/children*.
We welcome families of all styles, and adults may attend with youth related to you or not!
*You may register as an adult by yourself as long as you are a companion of a child/youth already registered.
- I have a baby/infant, can I bring them? Do they need a ticket?
No cost or ticket required for those little ones! I highly recommend using a baby carrier/sling/backpack of some sort for the foray.
- Can I bring my dog/pet?
We prefer that pets do not attend. However, if you have a people friendly animal on a leash (a MUST), with the understanding that some people may have real trauma from dogs and you respect any request to stay distanced from someone while also understanding that you may need to step away from the group to tend to your animal, then exceptions can be made. Underground wasp nests are active and aggressive early fall! Dogs tend to find them more than people!
