Event description

Samhain (pronounced "sow-in" or "sow-ane") is a Gaelic festival marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter or the "darker half" of the year. It is celebrated from sunset on October 31 to sunset on November 1, roughly halfway between the autumn equinox and the winter solstice.

Originally an ancient Celtic festival, Samhain has roots in Ireland, Scotland, and the Isle of Man, among other Celtic-inhabited regions. It was a time when the boundary between the mortal world and the Otherworld was believed to be thin, allowing spirits, fairies, and the souls of the dead to roam freely among the living.

Samhain was a time for communities to come together to celebrate the harvest, engage in rituals to protect against malevolent spirits, and honour deceased ancestors. Bonfires were a common feature of Samhain celebrations, as they were believed to ward off evil spirits and provide protection during the coming winter months. People also wore costumes and masks to disguise themselves from harmful spirits.

With the spread of Christianity, Samhain became associated with All Saints' Day (also known as All Hallows' Day) on November 1 and All Souls' Day on November 2. This led to the modern celebration of Halloween, with many of its traditions and customs, such as trick-or-treating and carving jack-o'-lanterns, having origins in Samhain practices.

Today, Samhain is still celebrated by modern Pagans and Wiccans as one of the eight Sabbats on the Wheel of the Year. It is seen as a time to honour ancestors, reflect on the cycles of life and death, and prepare for the darkness and introspection of the winter season.
