Family Matters: Towards Safer Relationships - Information Session

ECCQ is partnering with Nambour Community Centre, Centacare, Kyabro and the Sunshine Coast Multicultural Network to co-host an information session - Family Matters: Towards Safer Relationships.

Session Overview:

1. Understanding Harmful Relationship Patterns

   • Explore how certain behaviours—especially when repeated—can impact emotional wellbeing, autonomy, and safety in family relationships.

   • Discuss how these patterns differ from healthy, respectful dynamics.

2. Recognising the Signs of Unhealthy Influence

   • Learn to identify behaviours that may seem caring or protective but are actually limiting, isolating, or intimidating.

   • Use real-life examples to help participants reflect on their own experiences or those of others.

3. New Legal Protections in Queensland

   • Overview of recent legislation that recognises and criminalises sustained patterns of non-physical abuse in family and intimate relationships.

   • Understand who is protected under the law and what behaviours are now considered criminal.

4. Documenting and Seeking Support

   • Learn how to safely record and gather evidence of harmful behaviours (e.g., messages, financial records, witness accounts).

   • Explore pathways for support, including legal, emotional, and community-based resources.
