FARM WALK - Discover beneficial insects and agroecological approaches at Mulcahy Macadamias
Event description
The Byron Shire Council sustainable agriculture team in collaboration with Mulcahy Macadamias, invite our Byron Farmers Network members to come along to our free farm walk and learn how agroecological principles are being applied to a regenerative macadamia orchard in Myocum. Ros and Kevin Mulcahy along with Byron Shire Councils Agricultural Extension Officer, Mark Duncan will showcase the outcomes of the Regenerative Agriculture Small Grants Program. The Mulcahy’s are heavily focused on increasing biodiversity above and below ground while working with nature to produce macadamia nuts on their 16-hectare orchard at Myocum. Learn how their holistic approach to farm management is achieving biodiversity and production goals. They will share the journey and learnings of their biological farming path, in particular, how they intentionally implement management practices slowly while monitoring and assessing their successes.
Features of the "walk and talk" will include:
Introduction, context and the biological farming journey of the Mulcahy's.
Integrated Pest Management and monitoring of key pests and beneficials
Implementing biological insect controls in macadamia
Importance of interrow cover crops for insect refuges and soil management
Benefits of increasing biodiversity on farm
