Fathering Wellness: A Father’s Day CommuniTEA & Celebration of Fathers

Join us for Fathering Wellness, a special Father’s Day CommuniTEA Salon and celebration honoring the vital role of fathers and father figures in building and sustaining community wellness. In the Black community, fathers have long served as cornerstones—mentors, providers, nurturers, and protectors—woven into the very fabric of family and neighborhood life. This evening honors their stories, their strength, and their sacred contributions.

This unique event is co-hosted by artist and curator Melani N. Douglass and playback theater practitioner John Johnson, who together will guide an intimate and moving evening centered on the lived experiences of being a father, becoming a father, and growing through fatherhood. Participants will be invited to share personal stories about fathering and being fathered—memories of legacy, learning, and love.

Through the powerful practice of Playback Theater, your stories will be transformed into live improvisational performances—mirrored back with empathy, creativity, and care by a talented ensemble. This reflective process creates space for collective healing, shared laughter, and deeper connection among all who attend.

As with all CommuniTEA Salons, our signature tea blends from MĀK Apothecary will be served, creating a nourishing and grounding experience for body and spirit. This celebration is generously sponsored by WACIF, Valley Place Arts Collaborative, Carter Farms, and MĀK Apothecary.

Whether you are a father, were raised by one, or wish to honor the father figures in your life, we invite you to join us in lifting up the stories and presence of those who father wellness in our communities. Bring your story. Sip some tea. Be seen, heard, and celebrated.

About the CommuniTEA Salon Series

This immersive gathering blends meditation, tea, art, and conversation to create a space for deep reflection and collective wisdom. We begin with a guided meditation to quiet the mind and invite stillness, followed by a soothing tea ceremony to center the body. Through thoughtful discussion, we will explore how peace of mind is essential to building a thriving home and a strong community.

Inspired by the salons of the Harlem Renaissance, the soul gatherings of Combahee River Collective, the strategizing of The Colored Conventions, and the legacy of Black organizers using the home and community centers as places for transformation. This salon is a modern gathering rooted in history, wellness, and empowerment. Together, we will listen, share, and co-create a vision for a more mindful, peaceful and collectively beneficial future.

This event is made possible by the WACIF, Valley Place Arts Collaborative, and Carter Farms.
