Filling the Gaps in Family Domestic Violence: DVassist’s Counselling Model and Impact in Regional, rural and Remote WA

In this session, we will present key findings from the recent evaluation of DVassist’s specialist family and domestic violence (FDV) counselling services, conducted by the Centre for Social Impact at UWA. The report highlights the outcomes and impact of DVassist’s model, which delivers free, trauma-informed, and accessible counselling to victim-survivors across 58 regional, rural, and remote local government areas in Western Australia.

Drawing on evaluation data, lived experience insights from our counselling team, and real client case studies, we will explore:

• The unique barriers and access challenges faced by women in regional, rural, and remote WA when seeking FDV support

• How DVassist’s low-barrier, “no wrong door” approach is filling critical service gaps and supporting safety, recovery and healing

• The measurable benefits of our model, including increased wellbeing, empowerment, and connection to resources and local supports for victim-survivors

• Practical examples of how our service is making a difference, and what is still needed to meet demand in the regions

The session will provide a nuanced understanding of the realities for women experiencing FDV outside metropolitan areas, and showcase the importance of tailored, regionally responsive support.

Ella is the Chief Executive Officer of DVassist, an organisation dedicated to supporting people experiencing family and domestic violence in regional, rural, and remote Western Australia. With a background in psychology and nursing, and extensive experience in the community sector, Ella is passionate about improving access to trauma-informed support and driving positive change for women and families in the regions.
