Event description

Are you ready to explore the cutting-edge world of food innovation, both here on Earth and beyond? Join us for an exciting journey with Plants for Space at the University of Adelaide, where science fiction meets reality! We're inviting students from Years 9 to 11 to step into the future of food at our special school days, held at the Waite campus this November.

The ARC Centre of Excellence in Plants for Space is a research hub bringing together the best Australian researchers in the fields of plant biology, food technology and engineering to learn how to produce sustainable food for astronauts. We are opening our doors at the University of Adelaide node, to share our research on growing plants in controlled environment agriculture for space exploration and improved sustainable food production on Earth.

Kick off your adventure in our immersive Mars plant-growing facility, where you’ll see firsthand how plants could be cultivated on the red planet. Then, dive into a series of hands-on, interactive sessions that will explore:

  • Feeding astronauts for deep space exploration
  • Sustainable food systems featuring edible insects
  • How plants can be grown in space for food, medicine, and even bioplastics
  • The impact of Plants for Space on sustainability here on Earth

Morning schedule:

09.30 – 10.00: Plants for Space welcomes you on Mars

10.10 – 10.50: session 1: Future foods: edible insects

11.00 – 11.40: session 2: Future foods: duckweed in space

11.50 – 12.30: session 3: The space food game Future foods: duckweed in space

Join us on Monday, November 4th or Thursday, November 7th for this out-of-this-world experience! Don't miss the chance to see how innovations in space could transform the way we eat and live—on Earth and beyond!

Booking: book either a morning or an afternoon with us. Book the amount of tickets for the number of students joining the visit under the guiding teacher's name.
